Safety and Security: Understanding the Difference

Safety and security address different risks in the workplace. Understanding their specific characteristics makes it possible to better anticipate accidents, acts of malice, or situations of aggression, and to implement appropriate preventive measures.

Safety, security—what are we talking about?

In day-to-day business operations, the terms “security” and “safety” are often used interchangeably. However, they do not refer to exactly the same concepts. Understanding this distinction makes it easier to identify the risks an organization may face and to determine the most appropriate responses.

Security and safety: two concepts that should not be confused

Safety: Preventing Accidents

Safety primarily involves the prevention of accidents and hazards related to the work environment, equipment, or the company's operations.

In particular, it aims to protect employees, visitors, and the premises from incidents that do not necessarily result from malicious intent: fire, falls, workplace accidents, technical failures, or exposure to certain occupational hazards.

Safety prevention thus relies on measures designed to reduce the likelihood of an accident and limit its consequences. Employee training, protective equipment, signage, fire prevention, and evacuation procedures are among the measures commonly implemented in companies.

Security: Dealing with Intentional Acts

Security, on the other hand, concerns risks associated with intentional acts that could cause harm to people or property.

This may include verbal or physical assault, trespassing, malicious acts, theft, or a violent situation resulting from a conflict.

In businesses that serve the public, this aspect deserves special attention. Employees may come into daily contact with customers, clients, patients, students, or visitors and may be confronted with unpredictable behavior.

Security is not just about reacting when an incident occurs. It also relies on anticipation: identifying risky situations, analyzing the layout of the premises, establishing appropriate procedures, and ensuring that staff know how to respond.

Two Complementary Approaches

Security and safety therefore address different risks, but they share a common goal: to protect people and safeguard the organization’s operations.

In practice, the two approaches can actually complement each other. For example, a facility may have fire evacuation procedures in place while also implementing specific measures to deal with an assault or intrusion.

This complementary nature is particularly important in public spaces, where risks can be numerous and sometimes difficult to anticipate.

Why is this distinction important?

Distinguishing between safety and security makes it possible, above all, to better target preventive measures. Accidental risks and intentional attacks are not prevented in the same way and do not necessarily require the same resources.

Prevention and Protection: A Comprehensive Approach

For a company, the challenge is therefore to take into account its entire environment: its operations, its facilities, the people it serves, the situations its employees may face, and the resources available to them to address those situations.

At ARA Protection, this line of thinking is part of an approach known as soft security, which is to offer solutions that strengthen the ability of frontline professionals to respond to situations, without turning their work environment into a source of anxiety.

Safety and security are therefore not two competing concepts. They are two complementary components of a comprehensive approach to prevention and protection.
