From Idea to Product: How Did the ARA Coat Rack Come to Be?
From an everyday object to a low-impact safety device, the ARA coat rack was born out of a reflection on how to manage the first few minutes of a critical situation. An original idea, developed and tested to blend in with the furnishings of public spaces.

Why a coat rack?
At first glance, the question may seem surprising. Yet it is precisely this simplicity that lies at the heart of the ARA concept. Innovation does not always stem from new technology. Sometimes, it begins with a simple question: How can we better protect people when existing solutions are no longer enough?
Making Safety Part of Everyday Life
An observation
In public spaces, situations involving tension, aggression, or trespassing can arise without warning. Schools, retail establishments, government offices, cultural venues, and hospitality facilities must be able to protect the people inside them without turning their environments into sources of anxiety.
In recent years, several incidents that have occurred in public places have served as a reminder of this reality.
In October 2023, a knife attack at a high school tragically demonstrated how quickly a situation can spiral out of control in a matter of moments. In April 2024, in Australia, during a knife attack at a shopping mall, a bystander attempted to slow down the attacker using objects found nearby, including a traffic bollard.
More recently, in October 2025, the spectacular theft at a famous Parisian museum also served as a reminder that a heavily frequented location can be the scene of a sudden and extremely rapid incident.
These situations are different, but they all raise the same question: What can someone on the scene do in those first few minutes, before emergency responders or law enforcement arrive?
What if the answer were already right there in the setting?
It was from this line of thinking that the idea for the ARA coat rack was born.
In a professional setting, a coat rack is a familiar sight. It is commonly found in a lobby, reception area, waiting room, or hallway. It does not raise any concerns and does not give the impression that you are entering a highly secured area.
Why not build protection into this everyday item?
The principle is simple: ensure that the protective device is present without being visible as such.
The coat rack thus becomes a piece of built-in furniture. Under normal circumstances, it serves its intended purpose. When the situation calls for it, it can serve as a warning device and help maintain a safe distance.
Between the initial idea and the final product, the team had to experiment, test, and refine the concept. ARA Protection thus devoted more than two years to research, development, and field testing.
Protection designed for those first few minutes
The goal is not to replace emergency responders or law enforcement. It is to address the time before they arrive.
In those first few minutes, the professionals on the scene must be able to alert others, protect themselves, and to distance oneself a dangerous situation, without having to search for equipment that is hidden in a room or inaccessible at the critical moment.
That is why choosing the right coat rack is essential: it is visible, accessible, and immediately recognizable, while blending seamlessly into its surroundings.

From Everyday Objects to Gentle Security
The ARA coat rack was born from a simple idea: what if an ordinary object could help protect people when a situation is no longer ordinary?
It is this combination of furniture and protection that lies at the heart of the approach.
Because security doesn't necessarily have to be visible to be effective.
Because a place open to the public must remain welcoming.
And because, when everything changes, protection must be available immediately, wherever people are.
